Petros, the pelican
When captain Charitopoulos was rescuing that morning of 1955 a worn out sea bird at the bay of Merchias, he had no idea that he was giving birth to a beloved tourist attraction. Petros the pelican, as they named him, was “worshiped” by the Mykonians and was established in their mind as the island’s trademark. That first feathered friend of the island died in 1986, he left however worthy successors. You will find them strolling in Gialos or “lurking” for fish at the fish market of Pagas.
