Churches and Monasteries

It is important to mention some of the most famous churches and monasteries of the island. Paraportiani is a two-story complex of five churches where four of them are on the ground floor and one is elevated. This one takes the name of Panagia Paraportiani. It takes its name from the "paraporti", the medieval wall of Mykonos. Among the post-Byzantine churches are Zoodochos Pigi, Panachra, Agia Kyriaki, Agios Nikolaos of Gialos and Agia Eleni. More than 70 churches have been proclaimed by the Ministry of Education. preserved historical monuments. It is important to mention the Monastery of Panagia Tourlianis and the Monastery of Palaiokastro. The Monastery of Panagia Tourlianis was founded in 1542 on the site of the old church of the Entrances of Panagia. It houses the admirable baroque iconostasis, episcopal throne and pulpit said to have been made in Florence, while the icons on the iconostasis belong to the iconographer John of Corfu. It impresses with the architectural examples of traditional Cycladic marble sculpture. Paleokastro Monastery is a women's monastery from the 18th century with typical Cycladic monastic architecture and is located in the north of Ano Mera. It got its name from the neighboring hill "Paliokastro". The monastery is founded on the remains of an ancient fortification and the area has been recognized as one of the two ancient cities of Mykonos.
